Job Description

Upper Iowa University invites applications for the position of Assistant Strength and Nutrition Coach. The Assistant Strength and Nutrition Coach reports to the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and will assist with the design, development, implementation, monitoring and assessment of strength and conditioning programs for 60-80 student-athletes competing in five to seven intercollegiate programs (work in collaboration and partnership with football} at the NCAA Division II level.

The Assistant Coach will work cooperatively with coaching and athletic training staff to: develop team and individualized strength programs and nutrition plans in a positive and motivating environment, provide insight regarding health and nutrition as it relates to physical development and health, counsel student-athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training, competition, recovery from exercise, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, and supplementation, assist in the oversight and maintenance of two weight rooms and equipment, and assist with monitoring and developing of the intern program, including and not limited to the planning, supervising, and evaluating of all interns.

Essential Duties Summary

• Individual Nutrition Counseling
o Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance (intake and expenditure) of student-athletes in the context of athletic performance and health.
o Counsel student-athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training (match nutrition to training phases and goals), competition, recovery from exercise, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, and supplementation.
o Counsel student-athletes on achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass that is consistent with good health and good performance.
o Provide personalized meal and snack plans to promote achieving short and long-term goals for athletic performance and good health.
o Develop and counsel student-athletes in hydration protocols.
o Address nutritional challenges to performance, such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, and iron-deficiency anemia.
o Counsel student-athletes on optimal nutrition for recovery from illness or injury.
o Provide liaison with in- and out-patient programs for conditions such as disordered eating.
o Evaluate nutritional supplements, including herbal supplements, for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy; monitors use of appropriate supplementation.
o Develop resources to support educational efforts.
o Develop and oversee nutrition policies and procedures.

• Team Nutrition Counseling
o Develop and deliver nutrition education presentations, demonstrations, or events on various topics related to nutrition for performance to all student-athletes and coaches.
o Plan and distribute menus for training table and team travel.
o Recommend the appropriate dietary needs for all student-athletes during pre and post practice and games as well as monitor fluids and snacks for individual training, team practice, and competition.
o Work with all student-athletes to educate them in food selection (grocery store tours, food storage) and food preparation (cooking classes).
o Serve as a nutrition resource for coaches, teachers, trainers, food service personnel, and parents.

• Strength and Conditioning
o Work with teams assigned by head strength and conditioning coach, Track and Field, Tennis, Volleyball, Golf, Cheer to develop pre-season, in-season and off-season programs.
o Evaluate individual strengths and weaknesses of student-athletes and develop strategies to enhance performance.
o Design individualized work-out plans; implement testing programs; maintain appropriate records; monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of program based on individual results and data collected.
• Administration and Operations
o Develop and deliver sports nutrition education for university food service personnel.
o Assist with daily maintenance and staffing of weight room/strength facilities as well as assist in scheduling weight room training for the various athletic programs and assist in identifying and purchasing appropriate strength and conditioning equipment.
o Assist with monitoring and developing the of intern program, including and not limited to the planning, supervising, and evaluating of all interns.

• Other
o Assist in other duties, responsibilities, and assignments as determined by the Director of Athletics and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.
o Serve as Department of Athletics representative on various committees.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required
• Must possess a current CPR certification at time of hire or must attain certification within one month of the date of hire
• National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) certification or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa) certification preferred
• Must demonstrate knowledge of NCAA DII rules and regulations
• Ability to demonstrate and communicate proper spotting and lifting techniques
• Excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills (Microsoft Office) require

Preferred Qualifications

• Registered Dietitian or current nutrition certification
• Master’s Degree preferred in Health, Nutrition, Exercise Science or related field with a background or education in dietetics
• 1-3 years’ experience required, working in a collegiate sports nutrition and/or strength and conditioning environment preferred
• Experience working with Track and Field/Cross Country, Tennis, Volleyball, and Golf preferred
• Experience working with individuals with special dietary needs (i.e. vegetarian, gluten-free diets, PCOS, food allergies, IBS, diabetes, anemia, high cholesterol, etc)
• Experience in injury nutrition
• Experience with specific female nutritional concerns
• Experience with dietary & supplement evaluation

Physical Demands

Ability to lift 50 pounds. Bend, twist, and stand for extended periods of time.
