Job Description

The Director of Athletics position at Upper Iowa University is a Vice President position, reporting directly to the President, and serves as a member of the Presidents Council (PC). The Director of Athletics is responsible for the executive leadership for an NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic program consisting of 16 programs and a varsity cheer program. These responsibilities include the overall operations, management, decision making, and administration of the following areas: UIU student-athlete academic performance, health, welfare, development, recruitment, and retention; personnel recruitment, performance and professional development; fund-raising in collaboration with Office of Institutional Advancement; strategic planning; fiscal management and budgeting; scholarship projections and management; internal and external policy compliance; facilities management and planning; and public affairs, in coordination with the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM). The Director of Athletics collaborates with the President, the respective Board of Trustee Committee Chair for Athletics, university leadership, coaches, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other stakeholders, to ensure respective UIU Strategic Objectives are achieved. The Director, or designated representative, will also serve as an institutional representative at Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and NCAA meetings and conferences.

Essential Duties Summary

• Maintain an environment that promotes student-athlete academic success, health, welfare, development, recruitment, and retention.
• Establish and maintain a positive relationship with alumni and key stakeholders to facilitate development efforts in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Advancement, Academic Deans, and Department Chairs.
• Establish and maintain procedures and practices to ensure compliance with all university, NCAA, and Conference policies, procedures, regulations, rules, and reporting.
• Responsible for the development and oversight of the Athletics budget in collaboration with the Business Office; Manage the athletic scholarship allocations to minimize overpayments and maximize UIU academic/transfer scholarships and discounts; Oversee the certification of initial and continuing athletics eligibility and financial aid for student-athletes; Monitor contribution margins for each Athletic program.
• Establish a culture consistent with University core values; Evaluate, mentor, and recommend personnel for selections, promotions, and termination, as needed; Conduct annual evaluations and ensure professional development.
• Conduct and manage strategic planning to achieve short-range (one year) and long-range (five years) goals aligned with the University Strategic Plan.
• In coordination and collaboration with the Office of Communications and Marketing, oversee and manage the Athletics Department marketing and promotions of the athletic department.
• As a President’s Council (PC) member, participate in Council activities and events; Advise the President and Council members on issues and challenges; Maintain confidentiality and “own” decisions approved by the Board of Trustees, President, and PC.
• As needed, serve as an institutional representative at NCAA and Conference meetings and events.
• Perform other duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required, preferably sports management, administration, or related field.
• Five years of experience and demonstrated success in intercollegiate athletic administration.
• Experience as a coach preferred.
• Willingness to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
• Willingness to travel in support of the intercollegiate programs and NCAA, NSIC, MIAA, and GLIAC obligations.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in related field.

Physical Demands

• Periods of prolonged standing.
• Lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving of objects of over 30 lbs.
• Noise levels associated with intercollegiate athletics.
• Night, weekend, and holiday work as necessary and directed.
